Mandela Day – July 18th

18 Jul

Today marks my idol Nelson Mandela’s 91st birthday! To honor him, an epic concert took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City with performances by Dave Stewart, Aretha Franklin, Wyclef Jean, Queen Latifah, Josh Groban, Cyndi Lauper, Angelique Kidjo, Baaba Maal, Jesse McCartney, TLC, The Soweto Gospel Choir, Stevie Wonder, and many other celebrated artists. Oh, and remember Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the French president’s model/singer turned first lady? She performed tonight as well.

“CELEBRATING THE IDEA THAT EACH INDIVIDUAL HAS THE ABILITY TO MAKE AN IMPRINT” has been the theme behind today’s concert and the other events that have taken place this week in honor of the legend. With this theme in mind, Mandela made a call to action asking that donate 67 minutes of our time to helping someone else in any way we know how. I must admit, at first, I chastised the seemingly small amount of time Mandela asks us to give because it pales in comparison to the 67 years that he championed social justice. Nonetheless, you must begin somewhere… and Nelson Mandela says 67 minutes is a good place to start!

Happy Birthday Nelson Mandela!
Maybe we can talk to Obama about making today a national holiday, eh?
